Adrenal Fatigue

Fatigue | Stress | Chronic | Syndrome | Cause | Symptoms | TreatmentThe adrenal glands are two glands which sit on top of your kidneys, one on either side of your spine, and secrete different types of hormones such as epinephrine, cortisol, progesterone, DHEA, estrogen, and testosterone.

When your body is exposed to high and continued levels of stress, money worries, smoking, recreational drugs, poor nutrition, sugar and white flour products etc. the adrenal glands trigger more and more of the hormones in an attempt to cope. However, after some time the adrenal gland’s struggle to meet the high demand eventually leading to adrenal fatigue.

Symptoms of adrenal fatigue include increased blood sugar under stress, increased Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS), salt cravings, mild depression, lack of energy, decreased ability to handle stress, muscle weakness, absent mindedness, decreased sex drive, mild constipation alternating with diarrhea, and many other illnesses.

Treatment for adrenal fatigue is straightforward but it is important you follow a consistent and dedicated approach to ensure a full recovery. Lifestyle changes can be made such as more laughter (increases the parasympathetic supply to the adrenals), take more frequent breaks, take time to lie down and rest, increased relaxation, eat regular and nutrition rich meals, enjoy mild exercise, get good quality sleep and rest whenever possible can all benefit those experiencing adrenal fatigue.

An improved diet with food supplements to cover any deficiencies is important and should focus on unrefined carbohydrates, whole grains, leane protein foods and essential fatty acids (EFA's) in the form of oils or nuts and seeds.

Try and eat regular meals and chew food well. Avoid over processed foods containing hydrogenated fats, caffeine, chocolate, white carbohydrates, additives, colourings and general junk foods.

Increase your intake of fruits and vegetables choosing organic varieties where possible.

You doctor and medical practitioner can also provide advice and support if you think you are suffering from adrenal fatigue or showing early signs.
