Fatigue | Stress | Chronic | Syndrome | Cause | Symptoms | Treatment > FatigueStress has become such a popular word that most people think it is part of normal everyday life, however until recently people would simply be worried, over-worked or hurried-up. People were specific about how they were feeling and could go some way to understanding the cause and treatment of their "stress".

Nowadays stress is a catch-all term used to identify physical stress, emotional stress, mental stress, stress for illness or disease and a whole range of symptoms and ailments.

Typically stress is a good thing for us and gives us drive, attention and persistence to make our way through our lives. However, today more than ever before we are subjected to longer and longer periods of stress and higher levels of stress than our bodies can cope with.

Short periods of stress can be tolerated by our bodies as we can recuperate and recover from the stressor after it has gone away.

If the period of stress continues beyond our capacity to cope then our body can reach a stage of exhaustion and the reserves of resources it has to deal with stress are depleted until you reach your limits.

Once our body reaches the stage of exhaustion health problems can occur and cause your health, energy and well-being to deteriate. Digestive problems, nervous system symptoms such as confusion, dizziness, lack of concentration and motiviation, depression and mood changes may all occur.

The body's immune system is weakened leading to increased risk of infection, diseases such as rheumatism, skeletal aches and pains, eczema, hay fever and asthma.

Taking all the above into account you will most certainly feel tired, exhausted and fatigued. If it continues further you may well enter a state of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

If you are tired and feel stress is getting the better of you it is important you do something about it before you reach the stage of exhaustion. It can be too easy to put things off and tell yourself you'll battle on through stress but it will be much better if you can take action now.

Take the time to eat better food, drink plenty of water and take better care of yourself. Take a look at what is causing your stress and try and do something to solve the problem.

If the stress is due to other people work on your attitude towards them and try not to become angry. Typically your reaction is harming you and not the other person so it's important to start with yourself.

If your workload is too great try and make changes. If you have not had a holiday or a break for years then now is the time to take a vacation.

If you work in a polluted area or atmosphere take appropriate steps to protect yourself with a mask, protective clothing, move away from electronic equipment or computer screens etc.

Ideally you should make every attempt to relax and allow your body to naturally recover and handle your stress.

Once your reserves and resources have reached their normal level you will be prepared to face stress once more but this time be able to deal with and recognise it instead of running yourself down again.
